Water is one of the important substances our body needs. Its benefits and functions in the body are numerous. The importance of water in our body cannot be over-emphasized. Our body is 60% water and it is the principal chemical component of the body. Our bodies do not just need water to live, it needs it to survive.
Studies have different recommendations of how much water should be taken each day, including some saying eight glasses or two liters per day. This target may be far-fetched according to other studies, but they all agree, drinking water should be a conscious effort, not just when you are thirsty.
Water shouldn’t be replaced with soda or coke or any beverage, because the value of water to our body systems cannot be replaced with beverages.
Do you know that when sometimes when you are stressed, constipated or having headaches, it could mean that you may be dehydrated. Instead of going for drugs, drinking water will help. This is because water carries nutrients to all the cells in our body and oxygen to our brain. Water flushes out toxins. When you are dehydrated, water cannot carry out its duties properly, causing your body to stress itself.
Water and body metabolism
Water is involved in every type of cellular process in your body, and when you’re dehydrated, they all run less efficiently — and that includes your metabolism. Think of it like your car: if you have enough oil and gas, it will run more efficiently. It’s the same with your body.
“Your metabolism is basically a series of chemical reactions that take place in your body,” says Trent Nessler, PT, DPT, MPT, Managing Director of Baptist Sports Medicine in Nashville. “Staying hydrated keeps those chemical reactions moving smoothly.” Being even 1% dehydrated can cause a significant drop in metabolism.
Water and toxins in the body
Water does not cure or remove toxins itself, but the kidneys do need water to get rid of waste products. Sometimes when you have too much of certain wastes and not enough fluid in your blood these wastes can build up and stick together in your kidneys. These clumps of waste are called kidney stones. Enough water in your system causes your kidneys to function properly and fluidly.
Water and obesity
Drinking enough water helps in the process of weight loss. Water helps your body dissolve nutrients and also aids the digestive process. It keeps food moving through the intestines. When you don’t have enough water in your system, water is reabsorbed from the colon. This is bad for your body as it is doing the reverse of what your body is supposed to do.
Because of the effect of water on our metabolism, a metabolism that is in max mode turns fat into energy. When it is slow or is performing poorly, the body stores more fat and calories. This leads to increase in weight. So the faster your metabolism, the faster you can lose weight, the slower your metabolism, the more you store fat.
It is also advisable to drink a cup (or two) of water 20 minutes before eating. This will make you full and you eat less. It also increases your metabolic rate causing food to break down faster.

You don’t have to wait until you feel these symptoms, it is important to incorporate a culture of drinking enough water into your daily life. Water has little or side effects. Your lifestyle is healthier when you take enough water.
